The field
Fire above heaven, the sun at midday. Great possession is the hexagram of being entrusted with much, often more than you would have asked for. The lines are five strong and one yielding in the fifth place: the holder is open at the top, which is the only configuration that does not collapse the gift. Wilhelm-Baynes reads it as the abundance of clear sight: not just having, but seeing the having clearly enough to use it well. You are in possession of a window, a fortune, an audience, a seat at a table that has cost you less than it cost others. The hexagram does not make this comfortable. It asks you to recognise the asymmetry without flinching, and to behave as someone who has noticed. Abundance kept private rots; abundance kept honest holds.
Stance
Be specific about what you have. Name it, count it, account for it. Then redistribute one slice of it deliberately, while the holding is still working. A reference, a meal, an honest endorsement, a paid invoice for the freelancer who made the win possible. The hexagram does not ask for performance; it asks for accuracy. The well-held fortune behaves like a host, not like a hoarder.
Shadow
The shadow is forgetting that the holding is a position, not a virtue. People begin to confuse what was given to them with what they earned, and the conversation around them slowly changes shape: nobody contradicts them at the dinner, the work goes uncritiqued, the audience nods. The other shadow is the inverse: the apologetic owner, who waves the gift away, refuses to deploy it, and lets it spoil out of guilt. Both versions waste what was entrusted. Neither is humility; both are ways of hiding from the asymmetry that the hexagram named.
Changing lines
When great possession changes, the holding is being reshaped. A line moves and the abundance is either being transferred, deepened, or asked to take a different form. Read the resulting hexagram as the next contract: what you have been holding is now responsible for something specific, often more than before. The light is the same; the lampstand is being rebuilt under it.
