The field
A well in the courtyard — the source itself does not move, but the village above it changes generations. The hexagram is about the things people draw from in common: a body of work, a tradition, a piece of land, a set of agreements, the friendship that has fed everyone for years, your own inner spring that others lean on. Wilhelm reads the well as both shared and personal. The shaft must be kept clean. The rope and bucket must be in working order. A well that nobody maintains slowly silts up, and when the next thirsty traveller arrives, they reach down and find no water. The maintenance is the work nobody applauds and everyone depends on. Including you.
Stance
Look for the source you and others have been drawing from without thanks. The friendship, the team practice, the document, the inner ritual that keeps you upright. Repair what is silting. Replace the rope before it breaks. Do this without making it a project announced to others. Maintenance is quiet on purpose. The well is good when nobody notices the work, only the water.
Shadow
The shadow either drinks from the well and never tends it — assuming it will be there forever — or guards the source so tightly that nothing flows. The first version exhausts the people whose labour kept the water sweet. The second version starves the village to feel important. Both end the same way: the well goes dry, and what was shared becomes a story about something that used to be there.
Changing lines
When lines move, the maintained well attracts new drinkers. People you did not expect arrive at the source you tended in private. Be open about how it works — what the rules are, who can come, what each person is asked to give in return. A shared source needs shared upkeep, agreed plainly. The water stays clean because the agreement does, not because of any single person at the rope.
