The field
Wind in the sky, gathering moisture before it can rain. Small taming is the hexagram of restraint by gentle means. You are not in a position to overpower the situation; you are in a position to refine it. One yielding line in the fourth place tames five strong lines, the way a thin rope, well placed, holds a heavy door. The hexagram speaks of small accumulations: a draft that is almost ready, an investment that is paying back in slow uneven instalments, a relationship that is being mended one careful sentence at a time. Wilhelm-Baynes notes that the great wind has not yet come. The work now is to not lose what you have built by reaching for what is not yet possible. Polish, edit, listen. The yield is small, and the small yield is the right yield.
Stance
Refine what is already in your hands. Tighten the language of the proposal, return the small loan, send the message you have been saving. The work this week is finish quality, not new acquisition. If you are tempted to push for a major outcome now, notice that your evidence for the push is mostly impatience. The wind is gathering. Let it.
Shadow
The shadow is restraint that has hardened into smallness. People stop reaching not because the moment asks for stillness but because reaching has become unfamiliar. The thin rope becomes a chain. Or the inverse: refusing to honour the limit, blowing the small wind into a hurricane and losing the harvest because the cup was not yet full. Both shadows misread the size of the moment. Hexagram nine is a careful season, not a stunted one and not a forced one.
Changing lines
When small taming changes, the cup has filled. A line moves and the careful season opens into the larger one it was preparing. The transformed hexagram often shows the form of the bigger move, and how much of the polish you did is going to carry. Read it as the harvest, not as a new beginning. The work of nine has earned the next picture, whichever it is.
